When I was in high school, my best friend told me, a man is usually remembered by what kind of car he drives, for example, when one asks another, "who is tony?", the other might answer, "the tony who drives a beemer". The same friend also told me that I should get a NSX that is half destroyed and rebuilt after accident, although not really safe and sound, as long as it looks superficially fine, I should get it. Why? Because other men will respect you, and women will like you...
Although I didn't agree with what he was thinking, I have to say I was intrigued by the way he thinks.
Girls have their bling bling jeweleries and boys have their bling bling cars.
My dream cars have always been modest at most, my high school dream car was a 1993 Honda Civic Si hatchback, preferably blue. I could never imagine myself driving a bmw, I didn't know why, maybe my dream was a little smaller back then.
My first car was a family bought red Suzuki Sidekick Sport, a SUV, back in 1996, Toyota had just released RAV4, and Honda was no where close to releasing CRV. It was cool for a while, until a bunch of its electrical problems started to show, and then, a few months after its warranty had expired, one of its piston collapsed, it meant a $8000 repair bill when another engine installed. "Driving is believing", like Suzuki's slogan at the time, "...believing how much it sucked!"
When I got my first real job, I traded in the Suzuki for a yellow Mazda Protege 5, yes, it was yellow, I couldn't shake the commercial with the kid and "zoom zoom". But it was my baby. And the key, in many ways, symbolized freedom and responsibility. It was the "real thing" that I owned.
Although financed, I drove it for 4 years before handing it to my brother, who treasures it as much as i did.
As an investment advisor, there are some expectations on what kind of cars attach to us. Look at my co-workers, 3 bmws, 1 benz, 1 nissan and 1 toyota, even the assistants are driving german cars.
That was when I decided to lease a bmw, something I never really imagined as a reality in the last millennium, and early years of this millennium. Bmw is fun to drive, responsive, and fast. Even though it costs over a thousand dollars a month to drive. (lease payment plus insurance plus gas) Not very environmentally friendly either.
Now it comes another time I have to make a change, my Anna, the BMW, will cease to be mine when its lease ends next month.
Considering I am still in the early stage of my career and how much I wanted to purchase my own place in 5 years, maybe, it is not a bad time to consider something a little more modest.
However, on the other hand, I wonder, I wonder if others will see that imagine as unfitting to a successful investment advisor, what would others think? Then, I wonder, maybe I am not strong believer in myself that I will be successful enough to afford bigger payments on a car.
Or, maybe, I just think, cars are depreciating assets which are not good for our environment.
The fine balance I need to look for, somewhere between image and personal goal, both are inter-related somehow.
Maybe, you can help me ease my headache. Here will be my final list:
2007 Nissan Altima
2007 Subaru Impreza
2007 Jeep Compass
2007 Mazda 3 Sport
For now, the headache persists...

I vote for either Mazda 3 or Nissan Altima... but really how long are you planning to drive this car for? 2 yrs, 4 yrs, or more? To me, choose a car that can make you " HAPPY DRIVER " is the most important thing... High gas price, high insurance, and high lease payment; what the heck!
2007 Nissan Altima
1. 裡面設計很呆
2. 日本車的殼都很薄 一不小心碰到
就要進保養廠
2007 Jeep Compass
1.很耗油
2007 Mazda 3 Sport
如果不介意再開以前開過的牌子
是不錯 又不會很貴
2007 Subaru Impreza
沒意見
I am planning to drive the next car 4 years the most, most likely 3 years. I agree that M3 is a great car, but it is an "university student's car", but if I pick M3, I can actually go with 2 years, because the payment is much lower.
As with Nissan, I agree with Clara, the interior is a ted boring, but arent japanese cars in the same class all pretty boring? (think camry and accord). Jeep Compass is a big surprise, with CVT technology, it actually saves more gas than altima and M3, it even qualifies for $1000 rebate from government because it is environmental friendly, plus it has 4x4, probably the only 2 reasons why i would pick it.
Subaru is very boring inside, it feels like a rental car, but hey, it has 4x4! last winter's storm left me 4 days without driving, not fun~
What makes me a happy driver? hm... my good old protege 5, in yellow. :)
My vote goes to 2007 Nissan Altima, doesn't it have a hybrid model which could save you some gas too? And I totally believe you can afford it!
Jeep Compass... hmm.... it does seem cool, but for some reason, it just doesn't say "James" in my mind.....
hm... thnx, the hybrid is ted expensive, although i like the technology, I was actually considering Camry hybrid, civic hybrid, and prius.
u dont need to ask me..u know which one i would pick...^^
Benz b200?
wait wait... mazda 3 sport...
HUMMER~!
wait..that's not in the list...
Oh well...
With global warming as the "it" topic, I think driving a environmental friendly car earns you more respect from colleagues and customers than BMW. ^ ^
hm... so far the vote is:
2007 Nissan Altima - 1.5 votes
2007 Jeep Compass - 0 votes
2007 Mazda 3 - 2.5 votes
2007 Subaru Impreza - 0 vote
I agree with Sherry.
Mr. Lamb, I think a bicycle is in order.
Hehe
NOne of the choices.
Toyota Prius is the best. good for the environment (hybrid) and great resale value (Toyota depreciates the slowest) and reliability (Toyota's reputation). Besides, I think you can ask for refund when filing tax returns if you have a hybrid. All in all, u should consider Toyota Prius.
Even with my Corolla, i got >35 miles a gallon (local roads). you do the conversions.
I wouldn't jump on the hybrid bandwagon just yet, remember the hybrid is only on the market for a few years, so the fact that it is from toyota might not guarantee that the battery will last. Secondly, there is no recycling program for these batteries, they are extremely toxic.
Also, out the 4 cars, subaru depreciates the most in 3 years, while mazda depreciates the least, while toyota is somewhere in between.
That is a good point on hybrid, transportation canada is offering a program that rebates hybrid and gas saving cars, so Prius would qualify for $2000, while Jeep Compass gets $1000.
M3 is not "university student car" unless you were referring to the Mazda 3... and even if you were referring to Mazda 3, pls give it a proper abbreviation, and not to mix up M3 in this crowd pls~~~
if I really had to choose of the four mentioned.... Altima! as it's a new modeled year, and is suficiently powered.
If I were in your situation, I'd pick Toyota Yaris HB... more respect than all 4 abovementioned, seriously.
sorry dude~ not mixed your m3 with the mazda 3 crowd.
btw, got the altima like you mentioned.
